US suspends N-weapons pact with Russia, EU fears new arms race

President Donald Trump said Russia has been secretly developing ā€œa prohibited missile system that poses a direct threat to our allies and troops abroadā€. He said the US had adhered to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty — a key pact signed in 1987 that has been a centerpiece of European security since the Cold War, but Russia has not. ā€œWe cannot be the only country in the world unilaterally bound by this treaty, or any other,ā€ Trump said in a written statement.
