Philippines votes in polls expected to strengthen Rodrigo Duterte

More than 18,000 positions were at stake, including half of the seats in the upper house Senate, which has served as a bulwark against some of Prez Rodrigo Duterte's most controversial policies. While internationally Duterte is known for his deadly drug war, he remains hugely popular among Filipinos. Monday's polls are expected to tighten his hold on power.
