BRICS 2023 summit: Common currency, membership expansion, Ukraine on agenda

The BRICS group of nations and other countries from the Global South are gathering in Johannesburg next week to redress the world order balance. Expansion of the group's membership is top of the agenda with 23 nations including Egypt, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia seeking to join. Another key topic is reducing the dominance of the dollar, still the global reserve currency. Proposals include increasing the use of national currencies within BRICS settlements and setting up a common payments system.
