Republicans reject own funding bill, US government shutdown imminent

Hardline Republicans in the US House rejected a bill to temporarily fund the government, leading to a partial shutdown of federal agencies starting on Sunday. The bill proposed by the House leader would have funded the government for 30 days but included spending cuts and immigration restrictions that were unlikely to pass in the Democratic-majority Senate. The Senate, however, has been advancing a similar bill on a bipartisan basis.
