Spanish clergy sexually abused over 2,00,000 children, probe estimates

An independent commission in Spain has estimated that over 200,000 minors have been sexually abused by the Roman Catholic clergy since 1940. The report, which surveyed over 8,000 people, found that 0.6% of Spain's adult population said they had suffered sexual abuse by members of the clergy as children. Including abuse by lay members, the percentage rises to 1.13%. The commission also interviewed 487 victims who highlighted the lasting emotional impact of the abuse. The report criticizes the Catholic Church's response, calling for the creation of a state fund to compensate victims.
