US says Guatemala ministry is interfering in election transition of power

The US State Department has expressed concern over Guatemala's Public Ministry's attempt to undermine the transfer of power to President-elect Bernardo Arevalo. The ministry raided the Supreme Electoral Tribunal to seize boxes holding tabulations from the general election. The US is imposing visa restrictions on those who undermine democracy. Arevalo, who is due to take office in January, has accused prosecutors of persecution. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has also expressed concern about actions by the Public Prosecutor's Office.
