Beyond Xinjiang: 'China closing, destroying hundreds of mosques'

The Chinese government's crackdown on mosques has expanded beyond Xinjiang to the Ningxia region and Gansu province, areas with significant Hui Muslim populations. According to a Human Rights Watch report, these closures and alterations to mosque architecture are part of a strategy called "consolidation" aimed at exerting control over religious practices. The Chinese government's actions have been criticized for suppressing Islam and contradicting their claim of merely consolidating mosques. The report reveals that over 1,300 mosques in Ningxia have been closed since 2020.
