Independent inquiry launched into shipwreck off Greece that left hundreds of migrants feared dead

Greece's state ombudsman is launching an independent investigation into the coast guard's handling of a maritime tragedy in June. The incident involved an overloaded boat carrying migrants trying to reach Europe, with hundreds feared to have drowned. The ombudsman's decision comes after the Greek coast guard denied initiating a disciplinary investigation. A military court is already conducting a preliminary investigation into the shipwreck, which resulted in 104 survivors and 78 bodies being recovered.
