German train drivers to stage fresh strike

German train drivers will stage a fresh strike starting Thursday evening, escalating their dispute over working conditions. The GDL union called on freight train drivers to strike from 6:00 pm Thursday and passenger train drivers from 10:00 pm. This is their second walkout in weeks. At the heart of the dispute is GDL's demand to reduce working hours to 35 hours a week without salary cuts, which Deutsche Bahn has refused. The strike jeopardizes the future of the railway and staff recruitment.
